What Commercial Exit Device & Panic Hardware Actually Does
A push-bar exit device — often called a crash bar, panic bar, or panic hardware — is a spring-loaded latching mechanism mounted across the width of a door. When any person pushes the bar, even with both hands full or in total darkness, the latch retracts and the door opens. That sounds simple, but the internal engineering is far more complex than a standard door knob lock or a cylindrical deadbolt. Most commercial-grade units integrate directly with a mortise lock chassis recessed into the door stile, combining the egress function with a key-operated lockset on the exterior. The mortise lock body handles the security side — keyed entry, optional lever trim, dogging mechanisms, and in many cases electric strikes or electrified trim for access-control integration.
Because the mortise lock and the exit device work as a single system, a failure in either component compromises both security and life safety simultaneously. A worn mortise lock case can allow the latch to drag, preventing the bar from returning to the set position after use. Conversely, a bent or corroded push bar can apply constant side-load to the mortise lock spindle, wearing it prematurely.
